As it has been quite some time since I have written, I thought I should update the blog and attend to my timeline of The Lord of the Rings. Thankfully I am not as behind as I could be (although I will note it has been over a year since I have posted on this blog......yikes......all part of learning the trade of blogging, I suppose!) One day, I intend to have a routine down :D Anyway, let's see how our dear Frodo is coming along on his quest:
December 25th: "The Company of the Ring leaves Rivendell at dusk" January 8th: "The Company reaches Hollin." Jan. 11th-12th: "Snow on Caradhras." Jan. 13th: "Attacked by Wolves in the early hours. The Company reaches West-gate of Moria at nightfall. Gollum begins to trail the Ringbearer." Jan. 14th: "Night in Hall Twenty-one." Jan. 15th: "The Bridge of Khazad-dum, and fall of Gandalf. The Comp reaches Nimrodel late at night." Jan. 17th: "The Company comes to Caras Galadhon at evening." Jan. 23rd: "Gandalf pursues the Balrog to the peak of Zirakzigil." Jan. 25th: "He casts down the Balrog, and passes away. His body lies on the peak." February 14th: "The Mirror of Galadriel. Gandalf returns to life, and lies in a trance." Feb. 16th: "Farewell to Lorien. Gollum in hiding on the west bank observes the departure." Feb. 17th: "Gwaihir bears Gandalf to Lorien." Feb. 23rd: "The boats are attacked at night near Sarn Gebir." Feb. 25th: "The Company passes the Argonath and camp at Parth Galen. First Battle of the Fords of Isen; Theodred son of Theoden is slain." Feb. 26th: "Breaking of the Fellowship. Death of Boromir; his horn is heard in Minas Tirith. Meriadoc and Pippin captured. Frodo and Samwise enter the easter Emyn Muil. Aragorn sets out in pursuit of the Orcs at evening. Eomer hears of the descent of the Orc-band from Emyn Muil." Feb. 27th: "Aragorn reaches the west-cliff at sunrise. Eomer against Theoden's orders sets out about midnight to pursue the Orcs." Feb. 28th: "Eomer overtakes the Orcs just outside Fangorn Forest." Feb. 29th: "Meriadoc and Pippin escape and meet Treebeard. The Rohirrim attack at sunrise and destroy the Orcs. Frodo descends from Emyn Muil and meets Gollum. Faramir sees the funeral boat of Boromir." Feb. 30th: "Entmoot begins. Eomer returning to Edoras meets Aragorn." I would just like to point out that in Middle Earth February has 30 days. I would also like to point out that March is the last stretch of Frodo's journey, culminating with March 25, the day the Ring is destroyed. I am giving up the internet for Lent (which starts this coming Wednesday), so I will not be able to put it up daily. I shall do so at the end of Lent, with a reflection on March 25th as an important date in both the Catholic Church and Tolkien's works. Thanks for reading! ~Bilbo

If anyone has faithfully stuck around to read the few posts I put up every 20 years, then God bless you! Yes, I have been gone for quite some time, spending many hours in a place called School, experiencing things such as Homework, Tests, and Chaos, and also applying to that mysterious entity called College. But I have not abandoned the hopes that I have for this blog, and once the Craziness of Applications subsides, I will hopefully come back around and post some thoughtful articles for you all to read, and continue my journey on the road to becoming a Tolkien scholar. (Speaking of scholarly things, last year I wrote a research paper titled "Tolkien and Eucatastrophe." It was probably one of the best things I have ever written, so I hope to post the paper on this blog for you all to read). Yes, I, Bilbo, will one day successfully publish blog posts on a regular basis, but it is not this day! (Get it? :D) Here's to being organized! - Oh, and Happy Fall, everyone!
~Bilbo :) Merry Christmas, Feliz Navidad, Joyeux Noel, and Happy New Year to everyone!! I have had a wonderful (but busy) Christmas break, and have been catching up on lots of tasks and hobbies. One of the many things on my reading list is Tolkien's History of Middle Earth series, and I started it at last! I am currently reading book 5 - The Lost Road and Other Writings. Why, you ask, am I starting with book 5? Well, sometimes I just have to work with what the library has available :D It is very interesting, I highly recommend it!!
Some other interesting notes: I have recently taken up lettering/calligraphy as a hobby and will post some pictures of some Tolkien quotes that I am working on!! Stay tuned :) I've read about the Alphabet of Rumil in Humphrey Carpenter's biography J.R.R. Tolkien and after conducting some further research I've discovered what it is and some information about it. Here is a link if anyone is interested (I will have to make some time to write about it myself after I have a better command of the info). http://at.mansbjorkman.net/sarati.htm Well that's all for now! I hope to have a few posts coming up within the next month or so. Thanks for reading! ~Bilbo :) “Well, here at last, dear friends, on the shores of the Sea comes the end of our fellowship in Middle-earth. Go in peace! I will not say: do not weep; for not all tears are an evil.”I have always loved this quote from The Lord of the Rings. It is filled with the bittersweet sadness of final farewell, but yet it is also comforting. To give the context of this quote: it comes from The Return of the King and Gandalf is addressing the four Hobbits (Pippin, Merry, Sam, and Frodo). Frodo is about to go over the Sea with Gandalf and the last of Elves left on Middle-Earth, as well as Bilbo.
The second half of this quote resounds especially with me: "Go in peace! I will not say: do not weep; for not all tears are an evil." God created mankind as finite beings, which means that one day we will end. Our lives will end on this earth. As the old saying goes, "All good things must come to an end" but sometimes that is how things must be, and that is good. Often we mourn the tragedies that strike out world - hurricanes and other natural disasters, wars, and the like - but we also mourn the loss of loved ones. Thus, "not all tears are an evil" and neither are farewells, and this is a fitting quote for sad times in our lives. ~Bilbo :) Oct. 18th:
"Glorfindel finds Frodo at dusk. Gandalf reaches Rivendell." Oct. 20th: "Escape across the Ford of Bruinen." Oct. 24th: "Frodo recovers and wakes. Boromir arrives in Rivendell at night." Oct. 25th: "Council of Elrond." --Appendix B ***Note: there are no more significant dates listed until a very important day in December :) To be continued! ~Bilbo :) Before I update the LotR timeline, I want to say that I am back again! I must apologize for my absence, life has taken me on my own unexpected journey ;) and now I can finally post on my blog. Without further ado, I shall continue down the Road of LotR events:
Oct. 3rd: "[Gandalf] is attacked at night on Weathertop." Oct. 6th: "The camp under Weathertop attacked at night. Frodo wounded." Oct. 9th: "Glorfindel leaves Rivendell." Oct. 11th: "He drives the Riders off the Bridge of Mitheithel." Oct. 13th: "Frodo crosses the Bridge." --Appendix B ~Bilbo :) "Gandalf leaves Bree."
--Appendix B ~Bilbo :) P.S. Happy Fall! It is my favorite season, and I am so excited for the cooler weather! Sept. 28th:
"The Hobbits captured by a Barrow-wight. Gandalf reaches Sarn Ford." Sept. 29th: "Frodo reaches Bree at night. Gandalf visits the Gaffer." Sept. 30th: "Crickhollow and the Inn at Bree are raided in the early hours. Frodo leaves Bree. Gandalf comes to Crickhollow, and reaches Bree at night." --Appendix B ~Bilbo :) "Gandalf crosses Greyflood. Second night with Bombadil."
--Appendix B ~Bilbo :) "The Old Forest. Frodo comes to Bombadil."
